Our Royal Colleges guide professional development in society's most critical fields. They provide
leadership in professional training, certification, policy, regulation, and professional development, all
of which are essential to civil society.

In his speech on 13 January 2025, Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted AI's transformative potential in public services, particularly in healthcare. He shared a compelling example of AI's life-saving application in stroke treatment, underscoring that AI is not a distant concept but a reality already changing lives in Britain. Starmer emphasised the importance of embracing AI's opportunities while ensuring appropriate frameworks are in place to manage its integration effectively. Similarly, while discussing the transformative impacts of artificial intelligence on society, Stephen Hawking, a towering figure in modern physics, frequently warned that AI could become one of humanity’s greatest existential threats if left unregulated.

These perspectives from influential leaders underscore the imperative for institutions, including royal colleges, to adapt proactively to the accelerating advancements in AI. By embracing AI's potential and implementing strategic measures, royal colleges can continue to lead in setting professional standards and supporting excellence in their respective fields—the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Future of Jobs Report 2025 analyses global labour market transformations expected by 2030. The report identifies key macro trends such as technological advancements, the green transition, demographic shifts, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical fragmentation as drivers reshaping jobs, skills, and workforce strategies. Highlighting the significant impact of generative AI, robotics, and energy technologies, it forecasts a net creation of 78 million jobs despite substantial job displacement in traditional roles. The report underscores the urgency of upskilling, reskilling, and fostering human-
machine collaboration to navigate the evolving employment landscape.

The WEF is an international organisation committed to public- private collaboration in addressing global challenges. Established in 1971, it engages leaders from business, government, academia, and civil society to shape agendas across economic, environmental, technological, and social spheres.
